Question. I love watching your YouTube videos – Very easy to understand, not boring and good resource. Could I ask for a favour for a Landing page video? I would like to know the definition of a ‘Landing page’ and what is the difference from a page on a website? I thought a Landing page is a one-time page that features a special promo. After I researched on youTube, it looks like it is just one of the web pages. Here’s why I ask –
My friend wanted to sell some of her artwork. She only wants her customer to go to this sale page and won’t get distracted and wander to her other web page. So I thought creating a Landing page would be the answer (since it is a single page). Am I correct? If yes, could you please, explain it in the video too and how to create this page? Please note, my friend is not a techy and use the hosting company’s temp with some flexibility in modification. Thanks.
Answer. Not sure I’ll have enough time to do a full YouTube on it, though it is a good idea. Here’s what’s going on – there are DIFFERENT uses of the same word.
Meaning #1 – ADWORDS.
This is what your friend is talking about. Create a landing page that matches a specific query on AdWords, and here many people feel that LESS IS MORE. Don’t have a lot of navigation, options, buttons, etc., Just let them go FROM Google TO your customized landing page, and then hopefully take the next action like a purchase or a registration.
Meaning #2 – SEO Landing Pages
This is how I use it in my books. Similar to AdWords, these are very specific landing pages, meaning you WANT to rank for a keyword query like MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE, so you create an SEO-optimized landing page that MATCHES that word (and you have a DIFFERENT landing page for the keyword phrase RV INSURANCE, etc.). Similar to AdWords, these are very, very focused nichey landing pages that match keyword queries.
Meaning #3 – First Touch
This is how Google uses it in Google Analytics. Here the landing page is just the FIRST page that they touch FROM Google. For many of us, our HOME PAGE is then the landing page as defined in Google Analytics. However, your home page can’t be just focused on ONE keyword query, so it has a lot of other stuff on it, other phrases, content, options etc.
It sounds like your friend is using the #1 meaning above, which is totally legit. Just don’t get confused as you read articles about it online, as there are three DIFFERENT uses of the phrase LANDING PAGE – #1, for AdWords, #2, for SEO, and # for Google Analytics.
