Your question is really about localization. How do you localize a page or a website to show, better, for local searches? First, you have to understand how (and when) Google localizes content. For a search such as “technical writer” the user might enter queres such as:
san jose technical writer
technical writers in san jose ca
In all cases, but especially those in which the user enters the city name, Google (and Bing) will localize content. So you have to SIGNAL to Google that you are in San Jose, CA.
How do you do this?
First and foremost, get the phrase SAN JOSE California ON your web pages, starting with your TITLE tags! Include the phrase in your text, such as saying “As a technical writer in San Jose, CA, people seek me out for help writing technology manuals” etc. You MUST get occurrences of the city name on your actual pages. Second, cross-link to content on your site with the phrase. For example, have your home page link TO your landing pages around that phrase.
Third, sign up for Google+ Local, Yelp, and other local sites and get your physical address both on your web page and on your listing sites. This is very very important: Google and Bing look at sites like Google+ Local, Yelp, and Citysearch to “verify” that a website is local.
Fourth, build links and social mentions around the city / and target phrase. These external links will further verify your localization. Finally test your results. If you search Google, for example, for “San Jose SEO Company” you’ll see the JM Internet Group there. That’s no accident, as we have localized our content for our target city.
