Question. Should one focus keyword research on local vendors or national competitors for an online business only?
This is a really interesting question. For a truly local business, like the “classic” Pizza parlor in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then the answer is obvious: local SEO is incredibly important. For a business that is not truly local and the customers do not think local – for instance, CRM Software, the answer is also obvious: no need to do local SEO.
But what about businesses in the middle? We have this issue, for instance. Many students start a search for SEO classes and SEO training by Googling something like NYC SEO Training. So we optimize our pages for New York SEO Training Classes and Courses by (among other things) building links on relevant blogs.
So here’s how I think about it, based on the SEO principle that the customer is NEVER wrong in terms of SEO. You have to think like that think, and build content and link strategies that connect to them how they think.
It’s a bit of a hijack, but people are searching because they don’t know what they want.
Part of this strategy then is content. Create pages such as localized landing pages, or blog content that contains local keywords. for instance, this blog post on Houston SEO Training. It’s an example of a blog post that isn’t really about Houston but yet reaches out to Houston-based searchers.
Second, you need to create links and social mentions that are relevant, which we discuss later in the course.
So, yes, this is a relevant strategy if, and only if, your customers search local and you are relevant but not truly local.
