Question. I just finished reading through your SEO Fitness Workbook. In the 8th section, Blogging, you mention that you need to host your blog on your own website. Do you recommend hosting a blog solely on your website, or having it both on your website and a blogging site such as WordPress?
The “conventional wisdom” is that it is better to host your blog on your own site, primarily for link building but also for freshness content. The thinking is that –
So the conventional wisdom is to host your blog on your own site, at a subdomain such as http://www.company.com/blog. Note that http://blog.company.com/ is a subdomain (not a subdirectory), and technically speaking… this is actually TWO websites (therefore, not technically hosting your blog on your site). So a blog in a subdirectory = the conventional wisdom.
Now that Google has created the Penguin updates, and link-building has gotten very tough… a newer approach is to have multiple blogs on DIFFERENT websites, so you can cross-link them to each other. This is, to some extent, a link-building scheme. So that is the argument for having MULTIPLE BLOGS.
Also, if your blog(s) are on different keyword themes than your own site.. that would speak to having them on different sites.
Hosting them on the cheop sites like WordPress.com or on Blogger.com WITHOUT a unique domain is not really recommended… as you are pretty much just helping those domains. Also, I personally do not like WordPress.com – it has ads, and is quite difficult with respect to Google Analytics. I host my personal blog at http://www.jasonplus.org/ on Blogger with a domain “pointed to it” via GoDaddy, which costs all of $7.00 per year.
