Question. I have been considering helping small business with Google Places. I have noticed many businesses have not claimed their listing because they don’t know about it. If I was to set up their listing for them in total including adds, photos, reviews etc, would I then be playing on their ignorance to generate business for my self when they could do it for themselves? Maybe this is an odd question for you but I would be most thankful for a short response from you.
This is an odd question, if I understand correctly. So, first, I’ll assume you want to claim someone else’s listing and then optimize it for yourself? That’s rather black hat SEO, but fortunately you can’t really claim someone else’s Google+ Local listing. The reason being that you have to either a) control their phone number, or b) control their address, as Google either does telephone verification and/or post card verification. So you can’t really claim another business’ listing.
Second, if you are implying that there is a business helping other businesses to claim and then optimize their listings: absolutely! Google has done a pretty terrible job at making this whole process easy for non-nerds, so there is definitely a business to be had helping other companies navigate the Googleplex and learn to a) claim their business listings, and b) optimize them for SEO purposes. It’s called local SEO, and it is a big, and growing, business. The link to claiming your listing on Google+ is here.
