Q: If you do have a relevant EMD domain and content will you still get a penalty?
No, not really – assuming you have “enough” content, and especially if you have “social signal” such as inbound links, an active Google+ profile, Twitter, etc.
The EMD update rolled out over a year ago, and penalized ‘thin’ websites that were exact match domains for commercial keywords. Payday loans was used as an example. So if your website was http://www.paydayloan.com/ and the search query was ‘pay day loan’ and your website was ‘thin’ (not a lot of content, not good social signals like Google+), then you were penalized.
However, if you follow the principles of SEO that I teach in my SEO classes and courses, then you would create robust content, create social signals and links, and you’d be fine. The EMD penalty only penalizes ‘thin’ or content-light websites, not ones that work hard at producing serious content. In that case, having a domain that contains keywords clearly helps!
