Question: Is Hummingbird the beginning of the end for keyword-based SEO (i.e., is Google going to phase out keywords as a ranking factor during the next few years)?
Hummingbird has done one thing: churned up the mega hype engines across the SEO cognoscenti blogosphere! So perhaps it was a Google initiative to just generate a massive amount of confusing buzz and hype!
Let me share some thoughts, not just about Hummingbird, but about Google algorithm updates:
Related to this you should measure your rank on Google searches. If something changes, you’ll see a change in your rank. If not, not. To date, I do not see any major changes in rank across our own site and our own clients. So either Hummingbird isn’t that big of deal, or it hasn’t impacted us (yet). Still early to tell.
Pay attention to what Google says (more than the pundits). The original announcement of Hummingbird implies that this is a change oriented towards natural speech. A SIRI-like interface change. Mobile and intelligence is a big direction for Google; this implies that Hummingbird is less a change to the Google database, and more a change to how it interprets natural speech. The pundits (as pundits do) are getting this all wrong. They are just running around like chickens with their heads cut off about it being a massive, revolutionary, freak-out-now change to Google. So far, not so.
