Question: I am planning on adding a blog page on my website. How much content should I add 200,300 or 500 words and should I allow readers to comment on the blog?
In terms of blog content, I recommend about 2000 characters minimum. That’s about 3-4 paragraphs. Google clearly deprecates blog posts that are really short. We tried once, for example, to put our tweets out for SEO purposes and it failed. They weren’t long enough. Notice, for instance, you pretty much never see Google+ shares or Tweets on the Google search results. They are not substantial enough. So write good, well-written posts, following all the on-page SEO tactices we have shown in the class. Write both for humans and for Google in a good blog post.
In terms of comments on your blog, I think it’s OK to add them and actually helpful IF you can get people to interact with your blog. If your blog is on something controversial like Gay marriage or Gun control, you’ll get a lot of comments. If it is something sort of boring (e.g., SEO (!)), you might not get a lot of commenting…
If you do allow comments, be sure to install a plug in to filter for blog spam. I like Aksimet for WordPress. It’s pretty good at filtering out the really stupid blog spam. And make sure that your blog comments automatically append the NOFOLLOW attribute to any shared links – otherwise, you’ll get a lot of spammy comments, as they will try to use your comments as a way to get link juice.
