Question. How do you or decide what blog platform is right for you? For example Blogger v Word Press? So you are marketer for Small Business accounts (auto mechnic, beauty salon, tax guy, etc) – how often should you update content for each? monthly, semi, weekly, 3x week? What is the minimal to manage multiple accounts? So can “news” be a tab on your website or do you need to create a real blog site such as blogger and link it to your website?
In terms of platforms, each has its advantage. I like Blogger because a) it’s very cheap ($7 / $10 per year for a domain on GoDaddy that points to your Blogger blog like Jason+ Blog), b) it’s very well set-up for SEO – great tag structure, meta tags, etc., and c) it’s well-integrated with Google+. So for a quick, easy blog, it’s a great choice. Downsides: not as much customization in terms of look-and-feel, and you can’t host it on the same domain as your real website.
WordPress is much more powerful but more custom. It’s a more serious platform with zillions of awesome plugins like Yoast and a huge ecosystem of developers. It’s my No. 1 recommended platform for anything serious and substantial. I do not recommend WordPress.com, however, as they have a lot of restrictions on their own hosting vs. Blogger.com.
In terms of content, more is better. For most small businesses, I set a goal of at least one press release per month and one blog post; even better is one blog post per week, if possible.
In terms of news, yes it can be a tab – but you want “one click” links FROM your home page to each individual press release (this helps with freshness / SEO both for the home page and helps “pull” Google into indexing your new press release content.
