Question. Hi Jason, I had an SEO question that I was hoping you could answer for me. From your webinars I learned to use the Rank Checker on Firefox to measure how certain keywords are ranked on Google for our website. I am measuring roughly 35 keywords of ours against two of our top competitors. When I entered in my 30 or so keywords and ran the report through the Rank Checker and about half of the keywords returned no result for its Google ranking when I opened the Excel sheet(as well as our 2 competitors). I was wondering if you knew why the Rank Checker was not returning a Google rank result for about half of our keywords.
Answer. If you run a large keyword list, perhaps more than ten words, and you set the Rank Checker too fast, then Google will stop giving you data. You will see slashes in the results; and if you try to search Google directly at that moment you will get a CAPTCHA with a nasty note that says they have noticed “unusual activity.” So the work-around is generally if/when you run a large keyword list, slow down the Rank Checker tool to > 99 second delay between queries. I often run it in the background and/or overnight if I am running a large list. For some weird reason as well, I notice if I query both Google and Bing, Google seems to be more lenient.
Here is a screenshot. Remember it is TOOLS, Rank Checker, Options to get to where you set the delay to 99 seconds:
