Q: What is your suggestion on how many keywords to use on each webpage. I have been told if too many are used it appears to crawlers as spam. I was told no more than 2 or 3. What are your thoughts on this?
This question refers to keyword density, and you need to drill down to really understand what to do. First, you have to know your keywords. This starts the whole process; there are so many web pages and websites that really the primary problem is that they just don’t have a defined keyword list or objectives. Second, you have to get those keywords into your key tags, such as the TITLE tag. Here is where FOCUS comes in. Besides your home page, the regular pages of a website should be very laser focused on just one keyword. So in this sense, yes, you CAN overdo it. There is a Nigerian proverb: he who goes after two mice, catches none. So one keyword = one web page.
Third, there is the keyword density on the page itself. A good SEO-friendly keyword density is somewhere between 5 and 7 percent. But more importantly than strong keyword density is if your web page has “natural syntax”: subject, verb object, that corresponds to good grammar and “Natural” English. So you have to have good keyword density AND good, natural syntax. That’s where many people fall down. They have not only TOO HIGH of density but TOO LOW of quality in terms of grammar / natural syntax.
