Question. I have a blog on Blogger (http://www.blogger.com/). First of all is that good for SEO? Second, do you have any SEO tips for blogger? Is there anything unique to blogger that can be of particular help to SEO?
We’ll you’re in luck. I have my own blog on blogger (http://www.jasonplus.org/), and I’ve actually become a big fan of Google’s blogger platform for small businesses. Here are some tips and tricks for blogger.
First and foremost, just as with any blogging, you have to know your keywords. If you want a blog post to show up on a Google or Bing search, you have to pre-think the types of keywords that people type into the search engine and weave those into your TITLE tag. Blogger makes this pretty easy; but you still have to do the hard thought work of identifying your target keywords. Second, be sure to set a custom META DESCRIPTION. You can do this easily within the blogger interface. Third, be sure to add a picture and optimize the ALT attribute to be keyword heavy.
All of this is really the same general SEO principles for good blogging – no matter what the platform (Blogger vs. WordPress).
Blogger makes it very easy to have a custom domain. Just purchase a domain on GoDaddy on other Web registrar, and point that domain to your blog. Follow the Blogger instructions, here. What that does is a) make your blog stand out, and b) get you all the SEO juice that comes from having a custom domain. Even better – choose a custom domain that contains one of your priority keywords.
Blogger is great for local SEO! When you right a post, on the right hand side set the “location” to the location for which you are targeting SEO. Be sure to include local keywords inside your post as well.
Google owns both Blogger and Google+, and so they make it really easy to connect the two. Connect your Blogger blog to your personal Google+ profile, and then after each blog post, Blogger will prompt you to “share” the post on Google+. This sharing makes it easy to build your Google+ follower network, as well as incents Google to give you better coverage on search. In fact, I like to use Blogger myself as a “long read” for my Google+ posts, thereby getting my cake and eating it too: my posts occur both on the Google+ network and on Blogger, with the latter being well-indexed by Google. (Ironically, Google doesn’t seem to priority include Google+ on its own searches).
In sum, Blogger is a very good blog network for small businesses, and with a custom domain there are many tips and tricks to a successful Blogger blog.
