Question. I have just started an internship doing SEO for Goodwill of ~ (I live in ~), and am feeling really excited about getting started on keywords, descriptions, links, reviews, and all of that. However, one question that I keep getting asked and don’t really know the answer to, is how long does it take for results to start showing?
I don’t know if there’s a specific answer, exactly, but is there some sort of time estimate I could give them before all of my SEO work starts to bump up their site? I don’t even know if I should tell them days, weeks, months, etc.
Thanks so much for your help!
Of course the answer is ‘it depends.” In terms of straight SEO it depends on how frequently Google (already) indexes the site content.
Use the site: command (no space) and try to figure out the indexing pattern. (See screenshot).
If Google is crawling the website weekly or less, you’re in fantastic shape: changes will be picked up quickly, especially if you use ONE CLICK from the home page to identify NEW content for Google. Even a montthly crawl pattern is pretty good.
But note, the existing crawl pattern depends first and foremost on NEW content being added to the site:
If the site doesn’t (or hasn’t) been generating new and fresh content, Google figures this out and stereotypes it as a “slow update” site. In that case, your Google crawl pattern might be every other month or worse.
There are ways, however, to SIGNAL to Google that the site is being updated frequently…
Over time you can “Train” Google to index your content and thereby be able to rapidly change your keyword targets, etc. Remember to see the world from Google’s perspective. It is seeking to provide timely, fresh content for users. Provide this content. Get links and social mentions to “alert” Google that you are providing timely content, and your site indexing patterns will improve.
For many websites, you can thus get at least a weekly update pattern or rhythm and off you go to SEO success.
