Q. I am a photographer in Seattle and need some help, what type of SEO tips for photographers can you provide? As you know, many of my clients use Google and Bing to find photographers, but I am clueless about how to set up an SEO-friendly website for a photographer. What would be your best recommendations on SEO tips for photography websites? And do you think WordPress is any good for photographers?
Photographers often struggle with their SEO because of a very basic conflict: photography is about pictures and SEO is about text. To be blunt, Google loves text! Text, text, text, text… keywords, keywords, keywords, keywords! Google is very much a textual search engine and the most important thing to wrap your head around as a photographer is that you will need to deploy text.
Tip #1: Page Title Tags. Even if you have a heavy image site, if you just optimize the <Title> tag with keywords you’ll be better than 99% of your photography competitors! For example, set your home page TITLE tag to say something like
<Title>Seattle Photographer: Top Children and Portrait Photographer, Seattle WA </TITLE>
Optimizing your TITLE tags in and of itself will be a huge boost to your SEO!
Tip #2: Google+ Local. Most photography is a local business, so find and claim your Google+ Local account. I have a video on How to Claim Your Google+ Local Listing that you can watch for easy tips and tricks.
Tip #3: Add a keyword heavy footer. Few people will read down to your site’s footer, but if you just write a nice keyword-heavy footer you will be legions ahead of your Seattle photographer competitors. Just don’t over do it: about 300 characters and a few cross links to your main product areas.
Tip #4 add text below the fold. Retain the pretty photos at the top of the page, but add text below the fold that is keyword heavy. And, of course, have landing pages for your major product areas such as children’s photos, business photos, portrait photos or wedding photos. Whatever your specialties are, create landing pages for them.
Wrapping up – it’s really all about adding keyword-heavy text to your site. That’s the most important ‘on page’ SEO tips. That said, as I teach in our online SEO classes for the JM Internet Group, don’t forget that you will need links and social mentions. Links along with great on page SEO will spell SEO success for your photography website!
