Q: What is “article marketing”? Why is it low quality?
Article marketing in its most technical format refers to creating articles and using article websites to post that content. Then other people take that content, pulling it from the article marketing website and post to their own websites so that their own websites get fresh content. So there is an exchange going on here. You are creating quality content, and in exchange they are getting fresh content. In a perfect world they would link back to you as the author of the content and you would get a link benefit. You get a link. They get content.
However, article marketing is an ecosystem in which very aggressive hard-core search engine optimization knuckleheads steal each others’ content, remove the links, and worst of all spin the articles. Articles spinning means that they take one article and run it through software and generate 10, 15, 20 additional articles. Each subsequent article becomes lower and lower in terms of its content quality!
After Google’s Panda update, articles spinning became a really bad idea. And after Google’s latest Penguin update, it is now even worse of an idea!
That said, the concept of article marketing isn’t really that bad. What you can and should do is create high quality content that you either post on your own website as link bait; people want to link to it because the content itself is so interesting and compelling. Or you create or solicit the ability to guest blog on other people’s websites, creating legitimate content that has a link back to your website in the author bio.
All of SEO is a question of degree. A simple technique like creating great content and trying to get someone else to post that content on their blog is a good idea. But if you take this idea and run it on steroids like the articles spinning people do it becomes a really bad idea. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing!
In sum, therefore, I am not an advocate of article marketing in the direct technical sense. I am an advocate of creating strong high-quality web content as link bait, and also guest blogging on legitimate blogs.
