Q: I have a blog, should the SEO strategies we discussed today be used for calculating traffic to my blog or are these best for only sites where you’re selling a product or service?
Answer. Generally speaking, most companies and organizations have an anchor website and use their blog to support that website. So in that sense the blog supports the website by cross-linking, bringing in traffic, acting as link bait, and the anchor website reaches out to the blog as a source of fresh content. In my classes on search engine optimization, I am a strong advocate of having a blog.
Your question is more if you just have a blog. People who are authors for instance, often have blogs, and as you can see we have transitioned our own SEO Tips into its own self standing blog (JM-SEOTIPS.org). All of the same techniques that are used for SEO, such as page tags, link building, social mentions, writing keyword heavy content – all of the same techniques are equally relevant for blogging!
Other techniques such as link sculpting, which is how pages talk to each other on a website are also equally relevant, and the good news is that blogging platforms like word press make cross-linking extremely easy. So your blog and search engine optimization go together like peas and carrots.
Finally, I would recommend that you think about objectives for your blog. If you are selling something that might be a sale or a registration. If you are just blogging for publicity like Seth Godin does on his blog, then perhaps the objective is to get people to subscribe to your blog. But identify concrete objectives. This is again something that is equally relevant to both blogs and websites.
