Q. Does the use of tables affect SEO?
Short answer: NO (not very much).
1) The closer something is to the top of a page, the stronger / more important it is in terms of SEO (“on page”). BUT…. Tag Structure is MUCH more important –
H1 / H2 Tags
A HREF tags
IMG ALT tags
So even if something is ‘lower’ on the page, but is in a HEADER tag or an ALT image tag, then it is MORE IMPORTANT than stuff at the top.
2) Responsive site design / CSS is moving away from tables… But LOTS of websites still use tables and do just fine. So if you are designing a sign ‘from scratch,’ you want to ‘go responsive’ and NOT use TABLES but use the DIV tag and other more modern ways for design.
3) BUT… the SEO / Website design puts far too much emphasize on how website design / CSS impacts SEO. The answer is not very much. The basic tags like TITLE matter much, much more than whether or not you use tables.
