Q: You mentioned recent changes to the press release game with PRWeb and PRLOG. Could you go into more detail about what we need to do differently/be aware of as a result of these changes.
Answer. Penguin is an extremely hot topic in SEO, circa summer 2013, and nowhere is this more important than the relationship between press release SEO and Penguin Updates. Heretofore, I was a very strong advocates of issuing press releases as a way to help build links and generate social media buys.
However Google appears to have thrown the baby out with the bathwater here and has severely penalized sites that use press releases for search engine optimization. So currently I am not recommending that you do anything aggressive in terms of press releases and search engine optimization! However for most small companies a few press releases, perhaps 1 to 2 per month, and as long as they are well-written and retain a natural link structure, those do seem to continue to be helping with their Google performance. However, we are very early and understanding the new algorithm so my first recommendation is to not do anything drastic until the dust settles. It’s all sort of in flux.
However, this is not the first time that we have had a Google algorithm updates and in my very humble opinion, Google search results have deteriorated pretty dramatically in terms of their quality as a result of this update. We are seeing many very old posts show up on page one of Google searches and at some point there will be some sort of user backlash about this.
This is a very curious industry and if ever Bing had an opportunity it seems to be now. Google is getting quite arrogant, Facebook is emerging as a very formidable competitor, the mobile world is getting aggressively oriented towards apps – so it’s not clear that Google can dictate quite so easily how this is all played out.
But that’s all theory. The reality right now for small companies and people like myself is to not tangle with a giant, so my recommendation is to be very cautious about press releases and other link building tactics at least until the end of the summer.
