Q: Is there a limit on many search words can have on a website?
Answer. Okay, I will take this question literally. Is there a limit on how many search keywords you can have on a website? If you’re talking about a website, then the limit is pretty big and essentially the limit is pretty large if we stay on keyword topics. If, for example, you are progressive.com and your website is all about insurance, you can have pretty much as large a website as you want and it can be very effective for SEO as long as you stay on your thematic topic of insurance.
Now, let’s still take this question literally. If progressive.com was to open up a whole new line of business, let’s say fast food of hamburgers or cheeseburgers. Now we have a very different situation, this is a totally unrelated keyword community and I would strongly recommend that they have one website for ‘insurance’ and another website for ‘cheeseburgers.’
So the rule of thumb here is that a website should be pretty focused on a narrow set of keywords. After that larger websites tend to perform better than smaller websites.
Now, let’s not take this question so literally. Can you have too many search keywords on a web page? Yes, if you’re asking about an individual web page, you can certainly have too many keywords, and the general rule of thumb for a webpage such as a blog posts is to be very focused. Outside of the home page, I recommend that each webpage have a very tight focus on a single keyword.
Go back to progressive.com and you’ll see that they have split out there different types of insurance products into very specific webpages.
In sum, you need to distinguish between websites and webpages. And you need to grasp this concept of keyword focus and themes, which works in different ways at the level of the webpage versus the level of the website
