Question: How many meta keywords should I have? Can I have too many?
Answer: As we discussed in class today, there is a lot of confusion about the meta-tags. The most important tag for search engine optimization is the title tag, and it is technically a meta-tag. Secondly the meta-description tag is also very important as it highly influences the description that will show on a Google search engine results page.
The meta-keywords tag is ignored! Even though the meta-keywords tag exists both Google and Bing have publicly stated that they ignore the meta-keywords tag. So therefore I use it as a note to myself as to which keywords I am optimizing a page 4.
Now, as for the question about how many keywords. A good SEO and friendly webpage should be laser focused on just one keyword family. Take a look at progressive.com, and you will see that they have landing pages for the various subtypes of insurance which they offer and motorcycle, auto, renters insurance etc…
So a good page is laser focused on one single keyword family, and these keywords are woven into the HTML tags as well as the text of the page.
