Question: How many keywords should I try to target?
Answer: Keywords are the bread and butter of search engine optimization. So one of my primary tips for SEO is to first identify your keywords and then we those keywords on your website pages.
Outside of your home page, each page of your website should be laser focused on a single keyword phrase. Don’t overdo it! So I generally recommend one keyword phrase to one page on the website. Take a look at progressive.com. You’ll notice how their sub pages are very focused on laser specific content.
That website is a great model of how to build a search engine optimization friendly website.
Now, as I teach in my classes on SEO, the homepage is special and has special responsibilities with respect to keywords. So that’s a different topic.
