Question: Since meta keywords are ignored, do I need to remove them from an existing site? Does Google see them in a negative way at all?
Question: Do you need the company name on the right of all page titles or just the home page title?
Answer: The META KEYWORDS tag. It’s IGNORED by Google and Bing! Officially they have even said as much. So it does NOT help and does NOT hurt. It does zero, zilch, nada for SEO. So I use it just as a ‘note to myself,’ what is this page targeting?
The worst thing is that many of your software packages like WordPress have the META KEWYORDS tag in them, and people mistakenly believe that putting keywords there DOES SOMETHING. So it is very misleading!
So I use it just as ‘note to self’ – it’s optional. But I do like it, so I can just VIEW SOURCE on any page I created, and remember – hey what was I targeting? Did it work?
As for your company name, this is all about branded searches. I want (of course) to be NO. 1 for my own name, my company name. How do you do this? You create content with your company name, and cross-link accordingly. So to ensure that you are NO. 1 for your own name, you have to get that keyword on your website. BUT it’s an easy one to win, so putting it on the FAR RIGHT of all pages is an easy way to do that WITHOUT using your more valuable real estate (the LEFT of your TITLE tag).
Successful SEO is all about prioritization. You want to prioritize what you are doing, and place your keywords accordingly.
