Question: We’re in the UK, but we wonder are there any unique SEO TIPS for the UK?
Answer: The SEO game isn’t that different in the UK vs. the USA. The big difference is in the search engine used – Google.com vs. Google.co.uk. Beyond the basics (keyword heavy TITLE tags, meta description tags, etc., build links), I recommend that if you are targeting the United Kingdom, you make sure to get your hosting in the UK and register with Webmaster tools to send out a clear signal that you are a UK business. Some UK businesses host in the USA or other European countries, and that is very negative.
Here are other specific SEO tips for the UK (United Kingdom) / England / Britain –
Is local search different in the UK? – Pretty much the game is the same in Google.com vs. Google.co.uk. One critical factor is that your website actually BE HOSTED in the UK. If not, that will be a huge negative to you. This happens frequently with Canadian-based companies; they do not show up well in Google.com searches UNTIL they host in the USA. Or conversly for USA companies.
For UK websites, do meta tags matter? -Question 1… Clicks do not seem to matter, but there is suspicion that Google looks at not just the clicks but the click backs from a website. So if your TITLE and META DESCRIPTION ‘misinform’ people… then they click rapidly back to Google, and there is some thought that this is a negative. Bottom line: Work on creating relevant, focused content that really does address their needs.
Should you host in your own country, e.g. Canada in Canada, UK in UK? – That’s a good question and I don’t know the answer directly. I would TEST. If you are showing up for your target keyword, geographic searches, then you are fine. Pay special attention to Google Places and whether you show up. What I have seen is that a Canadian company that hosts in the USA, can’t show up easily in Google.ca searches; a USA company has difficult showing in Google.co.uk searches, etc. So if you want to show up in a particular country, you should HOST in that company.
