Question: I am an interior designer, and when searching “find interior designer NYC” first page is larger websites such as Houzz.com. What can single practitioners do when picking keywords? Do we compete?
Answer: Riches are in the niches. The first big piece of advise is to rack your brain – are there any search keyword / phrases that you have that are unique to you, not possible for the big chains? Second, if local is your game, you can get there using Google+ Local which has a huge review / social media orientation and the big chains are not nearly as good there as well. Third, you can get your picture to show using authorship / Google+ and that (again) is hard for the chains). All of this is looking for niche ways to outcompete them.
SEO is a like Asian martial arts. If the enemy is stronger or bigger, then you don’t do a frontal attack. You look for angles and weaknesses that you can exploit – redefine the game in your favor through niche searches, or social media etc.
Beyond using a ‘riches in the niches’ strategy in some markets you can also do very targeted AdWords to reach just your customers in a geographic way. Of course Google AdWords costs money but it can be useful for exactly this sort of problem. You need to create a ‘strategic map’ of your SEO / AdWords / Social Media Marketing strategy and conceptualize where you can WIN vs. where they are overwhelming.
