Question: When you publish a blog, you can submit to various blog bookmarking and blog directories. I would think that is Syndication, as we are submitting it to various places, like stumble upon, reddit, delicious, chime, etc…
Answer: No, blogs do not have the same sort of official syndication at all like Press Releases. It’s a bit confusing. First, blogs have RSS feeds but what they do is ‘push’ content out to individual humans who ‘subscribe’ to your blog. So FIRST you have to get the reader AND then they see your content in their own RSS readers (e.g. Google reader). That’s all well and good and certainly valuable, but it has ZERO impact on SEO. So get people to subscribe to your blog, but it doesn’t have a direct SEO benefit.
Press release services like PRLOG.org / PRWEB have a different sort of RSS. They have RSS ‘subscribers’ who are themselves blogs, portals, news media sites, etc., and those sites then PUBLICALLY publish the content on the Web. Then, in many cases (perhaps 10%) they retain a link back to the ORIGINAL source (e.g. PRWEB.COM) and in many cases you get the flow of link juice. So, unlike blogs, press release can generate inbound links and NEW people to find you (who are not subscribers). These benefits are better than the blog RSS feature.
Finally, blogs (and any content on the Web for that matter) can be shared socially through bookmarking services like DIGG or Delicios or Reddit. But that isn’t unique to blogs – it can be any content. So that’s a wash and it is more a social sharing than an official syndication.
What’s so great about press releases and SEO is that press releases have a traditional, historical, built in syndication system and you can exploit that for SEO purposes. Hurry! It probably will not last forever, and the trend is towards pay-to-play like PRWEB.
