Question: How do Google Places Listing effect Google rankings?
Question: Are there specific techniques in website copywriting that have proven to be effective?
Answer: Google+ Local (formerly called Google Places) is HUGE for SEO, especially for local search. For many searches with a local character (Pizza, divorce attorney, roofing company), Google shows local listings in a very prominent position.
I teach this in our class on Google+ Local / Local SEO. The main aspects are 1) claim your Google+ listing, 2) optimize it for keywords in the business name, description, and categories, and 3) cross-link to the website with a proper address and the same name. Also claim other non-Googel listings (e.g. Yelp, Citysearch).
Then it becomes a game of reviews. GET REVIEWS. More reviews will propel you to the top of Google, so reviews are huge huge huge.
