Question: When you talk about proper tag usage, do you mean meta tags and alt tags?
Answer: Let’s assume you have DEFINED your keywords. So, now you KNOW your keyword, where do you put it? I actually have a video on this at http://bit.ly/PPEOHF. Basically, you PLACE the keywords in the appropriate HTML tag, beginning with your TITLE tag. In most software, this is defined as the PAGE TITLE or something like that. What is going on is the placement of the keyword in the right tag COMMUNICATES to Google what a page is about. (We teach all of this in the classes on ON PAGE SEO).
There is some confusion about META Tags. The META KEYWORDS tag is IGNORED by Google / Bing – has ZERO impact. The TITLE tag is technically a META TAG and is the No. 1, most important SEO tag. And the META DESCRIPTION tag IS used by Google as the description of your page on Google, about 90% of the time. So it matters more as a formatting instance. ALL other meta tags have no importance.
SEO tag structure is incredibly important, and so we have a full one hour class devoted just to that issue.
