Question: I’ve been reading blogs and getting conflicting answers about hosting images and documents locally vs on a data storage site. I originally began hosti
Answer: Box.net, dropbox, and other services are cloud-based file storage. In terms of SEO, it’s not a best practice to serve your images on another domain. Why? Because the image names themselves can be SEO friendly, and if they are hosted on your own domain, it is yet another factor that Google looks at. So I do not recommend off-hosting any images.
What I do recommend is this. A) Identify your target keyword phrases. B) NAME your images after these phrases, C) use the ALT attribute in your HTML to embed keyword phrases around your images, and D) place images that MATCH the keyword target on individual pages, so you typically end up with ONE keyword image on ONE page. These will all be helpful to your total SEO.
Finally, if you are heavy into images, you can also set up an HTML / XML sitemap and reference your images there. This is less important but also helpful. But, definitely, you do NOT want to host your images on another domain. If file space is an issue, then identify a few TARGET phrases and create corresponding TARGET images, and host those locally. NON-SEO images you can host wherever you want. Remember, if you are linking OUT to those images, to use the NOFOLLOW attribute as well.
