Question: What are some strategies for influencing localization so that your pages appear across the country? The world?
Answer: Local SEO is incredibly important as so many companies depend on local search. If a customer is looking for pizza, a divorce attorney or the best roofing company – these are LOCAL search phrases and Google responds with priority to vendors (web pages) that are LOCAL and near to the searcher. (Hidden in the search is the location of the searcher – I.e., Google knows you mean Pizza (DALLAS), divorce attorney (DALLAS), or best roofing company (DALLAS) even if you do not type DALLAS into the search box – it knows your geographic location. (Or at least guesses).
So to succeed at local SEO, what are the main factors? First, you have to follow good on page SEO as I teach in my classes. This means putting the keyword DALLAS (we’ll use Dallas as an example) strategically on your web pages, beginning with the TITLE tag. It also means writing lots of DALLAS keyword heave content. If you are targeting micro cities like PLANO, IRVING, etc., then you would create landing pages for those local cities as well. Second, you need to CLAIM your Google+ Local listing, and optimize it for SEO purposes by writing keyword-heavy business name, description, etc. Third, you need to CROSS-link your Google+ Local page to your website, and make sure that your website has the SAME address as your Google+ Local page. Finally, you need to GET REVIEWS. Once you have crossed the t’s and dotted the I’s… Local SEO comes down to REVIEWS. You need a review generating strategy.

Finally, as you are asking about different companies, I want to point out the importance of WHERE you are hosted and your domain extension. If, for example, you are a Canadian company, you want a .ca domain extension AND you want to be hosted in Canada. Google clearly rewards sites that have both the .ca extension and hosting in Canada on Google.ca. So that is true for ALL countries: Host in the target country and use the target country extension. The USA is the exception as we ‘own’ Google.com and we have the ‘.com’ extensions vs. the .us extensions in heavy practice.
