Question: There are so many coach potatoes in the United States – watching TV, browsing the web on the cell phones… I have heard the term ‘concurrent consumption’ – what does it mean for digital marketing?
Answer: Yes, we are a nation of coach potatoes. And we are also multi-tasking more and more. Cell phone while driving? Check. Cell phone while in the toilet – absolutely. So cell phone while watching TV – absolutely! Concurrent consumption refers to people watching TV and then using their phone / table to TWITTER or FACEBOOK at the same time.
This is having cross marketing implications. Get the TV show to promote a TWITTER hashtag for instance. Get the TV show to drive traffic to the Facebook page or vice-versa. Use Facebook for real-time interaction. American Idol has done a great job with his on Twitter. Other shows have done Twitter or Facebook real-time polls.
Concurrent consumption is not just for big TV shows. Small businesses need to think about it as well. Trade shows these days are embracing Twitter as well, so people use hash tags while they are at the show, etc.
