Question: Beyond Google Places (Google+ Local), how do you get to the top of Google local searches? What does it mean to claim your other local listings? What is citation?
Answer: Citations are other websites beyond Google+ Local that refer to your website address (URL) and also your physical address, business name, etc. What these citations do is reconfirm to Google your physical address, business name, etc. – the MORE of these external citations, the MORE confident Google is that your business is legitimate.
What’s the implication of local citations for local SEO? Get them! The MORE citations the BETTER. So use Google to identify other sources in your industry of local citations (usually, YELP, CITYSEARCH, JUDY’S BOOKS, BING, etc.), and register your company on those. The YELLOW PAGES are a particularly relevant place for local citations. So then claim your local listings, get your address / business name the SAME across them, and you’ll be on your way.
Citations are excellent for LOCAL SEO. The MORE the MERRIER!
