Question: What’s the difference between www.jm-seo.net and http://jm-seo.net?
Answer: There is no difference, in the sense that you can set either one up. http://twitter.com/ for instance is the ‘real’ twitter, not http://www.twitter.com. What then you need to do is set it to ‘redirect’ automatically to the preferred set up. Why? Because http://twitter.com/ and http://www.twitter.com/ to Googel are TWO DIFFERENT WEBSITES.
Why do we care? Because this SPLITS the PageRank between the two, and gets generally confusing. Are they the same? Or different? Is there duplicate content, or the same content? So it is a best practice to standardize on one, and just promote / use the one. So, for instance, we are standardized on http://www.jm-seo.net/.
How do you do this? The magic thing to know is the .htaccess file, and in Google Webmaster Tools, you set a preferred domain, that tells Google which one you want. It’s called a ‘preferred domain.’
