Question: Is it better to have lots of keywords or just 2 to 3 keywords/phrases assigned to each page?
Answer: Focus, focus, focus! It is MUCH BETTER for every page, outside of the home page, to have a SINGLE keyword focus. As I teach in my classes, take a look at http://www.geico.com/ – it is a very well built site from an SEO perspective. Notice how each page is LASER focused on one type of insurance – motorcycle, atv, home, etc. So ONE PAGE / ONE KEYWORD focus. Some of those are related phrases – but they are all clustered around a phrase like ‘motorcycle insurance.’
The home page is special – it has a lot to do, and a lot of power. So it cannot be laser focused like the subpages. Teaching not just good keyword discovery but where to place keywords and effective landing page design is something I do in my classes.
