We started our business with over 4000 products, none of them optimized the right way, now we are debating between starting to optimize our website based on a priority system or keep only 400-500 products and start adding more once those are fully optimized . Based on what’s best from the SEO point of view, What would you recommend?
Answer: OK, I took a look at your site. It’s pretty interesting :-)! But products are products to Google, and keywords are keywords. So first and foremost: Prioritize.
The first thing to do is create a clear, organized keyword worksheet / map of your keywords and get a conceptual map of how products relate. So some products are going to be searched for based on VERY specific words (I am looking for such-and-such product); others might be found by more general searches (I am looking for a store that specializes in such-and-such).
Second, what I usually do is what I call a QUICK FIX. That means adjusting the a) TITLE tags on each and every page of the site, and b) the META DESCRIPTIONS. I usually also do c) a company paragraph that is keyword heavy and append that to each and every page on the site.
Third, I circle back and look for opportunities. For a site like yours, Google’s merchant center is going to be a huge opportunity. So you want to get your products into it, and also get reviews.
Finally, SEO is a long term game, so you have to start somewhere. PRIORITIZE. Start with a) the EASY things to do (fix TITLE tags), and/or b) your HIGH PRIORITY products or phrases. It’s either what’s easy to change, fast, or what’s really important or both.
