Answer: Yes, the code / the “linked to” object MUST reside on your site and the other website MUST link over to you to COUNT as a link.
As for Facebook, only the publically viewable (not logged in) links count. Anything that is behind the registration wall is INVISIBLE to Google and thus cannot be part of the link game. But likes, shares, that sort of thing definitely do count.
