Question: How is getting links and not giving fair or sustainable?
Answer: Yes, it is not fair. It is a perverse outcome of how Google built the link system. So the people who “get it” try to get lots of inbound links and are not really motivated to give outbound links.
Now there are turns of the screw, however. Some people – myself included – think that Google looks at sites that have ZERO outbound links as over-optimized. So I think you want to have some outbound links on your site, so as to appear “natural” and a “good citizen” – not too many, and definitely in your keyword community. Be judicious with your outbound links.
But, yes you are right and perceptive: Google’s link schemes has had some negative impacts on how website are built.
