Question: 1) how many keywords should we have , 2) a business consulting firm that offers many services (e.g. business plans, strategy, accounting) how should it work on keywords?
Answer: Keyword focus is a huge issue. Outside of the home page, most pages should have a SINGLE tight focus on a keyword family. So, on Geico.com, for instance, notice how they break out their product lines to one keyword family per page (motorcycle insurance, car insurance, ATV insurance, etc.). On a good blog, each post also has a very narrow focus as does a good news release. The home page, in contrast, is special. It has a lot of responsibilis and so cannot focus just on one keyword. We discuss it in more detail in the class on website structure and SEO.
For a business consulting firm, you need to prioritize and group together your service lines. Look at some of the personal attorney websites like Walkup Law in SF, that we discussed today. Notice how they have targeted pages for EACH of their service lines. So your homework is to identify 5-7 major service lines and then target those on your site.
