Question: What are some steps I can take to improve my Google Places listing?
Answer: We teach a full hour on local search optimization, but in a nutshell. First, claim your listing. Second, include keywords in your business name / title and description. Third, get reviews! Keyword heavy reviews, from powerful reviewers who are in your local community are worth their weight in GOLD. So create a process as a business wherein you encourage people to review your business. Simply asking is often enough; but realize you will ask ten people to get one review. Fourth, cross-link your website to your Google Places listing directly (one-click). Fifth, make sure that you have a Google map on your website / directions page and that this Google map is the pop up of your local listing with reviews. (Check out http://www.rongordonwatches.com – a New York Watch Repair shop for an example). Sixth, claim all of your local reviews such as Yelp, Citysearch, etc. Seventh, make sure your physical address is on EVERY page of your website and that it is the SAME as the address listing on yoru Google Places page. Eighth, try to get links from local businesses / websites as well. Ninth and tenth: GET REVIEWS. The sheer quantity of reviews is absolutely critical to success.
