Question: Is there any point to getting a Google local listing just for the link – even if your business isn’t really local?
Answer: Not really. If your business is not local, then I would not really worry about Google Places. The one feature you might like about it is that it does serve as a place that people can easily write reviews about your business; then you can link over to it, and who potential customers that people really do like you, and that they are willing to write this on an independent review site.
