Question: He may get to this but I am interested in hearing about “breadcrumbs” ~ what they are, the effect on SEO & the effect on user experience.
Answer: Breadcrumb trails show up on Google searches (you’ll see them on many of the Geico.com pages, when returned on a Google search such as ‘Motorcycle Insurance Quote’), so that much we know. Google likes them, and will generate them if you set up a breadcrumb trail.
Now, second question – do they IMPACT whether you show up on a Google search? I don’t think anyone really knows for certain. They certainly do not hurt, and probably help, especially if they are keyword centric. They also help Google understand the relationship between keywords as in California – Davis, Californi – Los Angeles, California – San Jose (to show that you have a ‘folder’ California that has ‘pages’ for each city). So I am a big fan of them.
As for the user experience, I find that many people like them. I think that they help discipline us as web designers to create organized websites, and that is probably a good thing for both humans and for Google. But like so many of the really detailed questions on SEO we don’t really have sufficient data to say for certain how they impact Google rank.
