Question: Regarding misspellings and whether or not you should optimize for them. Obviously a website with misspellings does not look professional, so if you do suggest optimizing for them how do you do that?
Answer: What you want to do is ‘reach out’ based on misspellings but preserve your brand, that you know what you are talking about. So I recommend creating pages or content that says such-and-such might be spelled incorrectly as such-and-such, but here is the correct spelling.
For instance, I wrote this page for CPMC (http://www.cpmc.org/services/surgery/robotic/), focused on the da vinci robot for robotic surgery. At the bottom, I wrote –
Note: Da Vinci takes its name from Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci the famous Italian artist and scientist. ‘da Vinci’ may be misspelled as one word, daVinci, as in daVinci robotic surgery, or daVinci surgery, or daVinci certified surgeon, but the correct spelling is two words, da Vinci.
Because people misspell da vinci, frequently, I spelled it all the different ways that potential people interested in robotics da Vinci surgery would search. So that’s one idea. Another is to literally create a page about misspellings of the word, and then explain that they are incorrect (I.e., that you know what you are doing). The trick is to preserve your brand identity as someone who knows what he / she is doing but also reach out to the customers who aren’t the best spellers!
