Question: To show up for attorney and lawyer how do I optimize for both if I want to be consistent and only use “lawyer” on my page?
Answer: Synonyms are very important to successful SEO. First and foremost, of course, you have to do your research and find out which ones are used, and which more frequently. For ‘attorney’ vs. ‘lawyer,’ there is about 1.25 times more useage of ‘lawyer.’
Then the problem arises, as you indicate, how do you stay consistent? The short answer is you can’t, really, for SEO purposes. You have to mix and match and use both, especially in a very competitive industry. You can use the ~ (tilda) command as in ~lawyer on Google and you’ll see that Google DOES realize that they are the same word. But, if you optimize on lawyer and a competitor optimizes on attorney and the search is for ‘attorney,’ – all things being equal – they will beat you out. So you have to optimize on both.
This problem occurs all the time: What you need to do for Google vs. what you want to do for humans / consistency, look-and-feel, etc.
Some ideas. 1) Put lawyer and attorney BOTH in the TITLE tags of your pages, which most humans barely notice. 2) create SOME pages that are attorney and OTHER pages that are lawyer, 3) be consistent at the TOP of the page (above the fold), where humans read and see, and mix / match the two at the bottom. There is no good solution here.
