Question: You mentioned that Google likes wordy web pages. We have customers commit that they like our web site because it gives them the information they need without being to wordy. How do we make both happy? Use higgen keywords within HTML
Answer: Yes, Google clearly prefers text heavy, keyword heavy pages, no question. And humans tend to prefer clean websites, with lots of pictures. iPhone interface, that sort of thing. So there is definitely a collision here. What most web designers do not realize is you are designing for TWO audience: Google, which prefers text, and humans who prefer pictures.
There is no perfect solution. Some ideas. One, put pictures and clean, clear text at the TOP of pages, ABOVE the fold. Most humans do not read down the page. Put text at the bottom for Google. Two, have some text heavy pages to pull in searches from Google and have OTHER pages on the website that are not text heavy. Not every page on a website has to be SEO-friendly.
The home page, as we will learn in the class on website structure for SEO, is special. It is very, very powerful. So you can’t just make your home page visual for humans – as that is a huge negative for Google. On the home page, generally you must put the visuals and pictures at the top for humans and lots of text at the bottom for Google.
It’s a design challenge: Designing for both audiences.
