Question: How many keywords can you put on a page?
Answer: FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. Besides the home page, which is special, most landing pages are laser focused on a specific keyword family. Take a look at Geico.com and browse its landing pages, and you’ll see that they are laser focused on specific keyword families.
Beyond that, there are character limits: 66 for the TITLE tag and 155 for the META DESCRIPTION. So that, also, forces you to focus on a few specific keywords.
Finally, the home page is special. It cannot be laser focused, so you have to trade off its special SEO power vs. focus. A good home page (like geico.com) has a very well focused TITLE tag and then has lots of closely related content that leads you ONE CLICK from the HOME PAGE to the subordinate, landing pages. It can’t be as focused as the landing pages, but it is still focused on the higher level keywords and acts as a one-click gateway to the landing pages.
But, in sum, focus your efforts on tightly defined keywords.
