Question: Given all things equal regarding structure, would it help to use a subdomain to help with rank since you can add an exact match domain in the subdomain url?
Question: If so, would the subdomain using a 301 redirect to the home page be effective?
Answer: Subdomains are helpful for SEO, but have some negatives. The biggest is the blog.jm-seo.net is a DIFFERENT website to Googel than www.jm-seo.net. There has been some rumor that Google is changing this, but I have not seen real evidence.
A better solution is http://www.jm-seo.net/blog (put the blog or whatever in a directory) vs. a subdomain. I am not a huge fan of subdomains as I see no evidence that they have compelling advantages over directories.
301 redirects tend to be invisible, and just flow through by Google. So they aren’t much help in the long run – Google just sees ‘through them’ and goes to the actual page.
