Question: Thank you for a webinar today, it was very helpful! I use Core Commerce for my site and they have simple straight forward do it yourself SEO optimization but the one thing I am not sure about; Is it important to use same keywords in all areas? Meta Title Description, Meta keywords, Meta Title, Alt/Title Tag and over and over again in the product descriptions? I originally hired a company to do this but all they did was enter the SEO information on the home page. I am now going in and entering the info for each product that I offer and as a result have started to see more traffic to my site.
Answer: The answer is FOCUS. Each page should have a UNIQUE TITLE tag, UNIQUE META DESCRIPTION tag, and UNIQUE content. That doesn’t mean that every single aspect of the page is unique and different from the others; but you do NOT want the SAME TITLE tag on two different pages on your site, etc.
Success at SEO is all about FOCUS. Each page (Except the HOME PAGE) should be laser focused on one keyword / keyword family. It is a mistake to make them all the same; just as bad is to just throw up keywords willy-nilly across the site.
Take a look at a very effective website for SEO, like geico.com, and you’ll notice that each page is LASER FOCUSED on specific keywords (Motorcycle Insurance, ATV Insurance, etc.).
Your SEO company was right in the sense that the home page is the MOST POWERFUL page on the website; it does deserve the most attention; it cannot be laser focused, as it also serves as a GATEWAY to the rest of the website.
But they – or you – should also revise the subordinate, landing pages, to be laser focused on specific keywords.
