Question: Given that the first page of search results is the only place to be, practically speaking, and businesses are starting to apply good SEO tactics to be there, is it reasonable to conclude that the useful keyword space on a topic will be completely saturated at some point? Just talking about organic results, but could it become like real estate, someone is optimizing on all the useful long tail KW and latecomers won’t ever penetrate the top results?
Answer: Yes, it’s very much a WINNER TAKE ALL, competitive game. SEO is a contact sport, especially in certain high volume searches. So it’s competitive! Should that discourage you: NO. Someone has to win, and it can be you. It just takes effort and strategy.
For most businesses – fortunately – the competition isn’t that tough. With a little knowledge, a little effort, you CAN get to the top. Over time, people are getting more and more hip to SEO, and it is becoming MORE AND MORE competitive. Welcome to the 2010’s!
A couple other ideas that are central. a) For local search, REVIEWS are critical and it is very difficult to instantly create tens or hundres of reviews, so the early adopters may really cement in their lead, b) the long tail – riches are in the niches – so if you can identify valuable niche terms, those are definitely easier. That’s a great SEO strategy – focus on niches.
