Question: In the course of yesterday, you mentioned that we could ask you questions.
So here goes, I have to finalize with our Designer, and instead of going back and forth, I have taken the courage to ask an expert.
Is it imperative for SEO Purposes that the Home page, have a lot of content, or any content at all.
It seems that the fashion today is to have a lot of images and buttons on the home page, and little or no content.
This is very appealing but I am not sure, how this would affect the SEO ratings for the website.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you so much for your time, it is very much appreciated.
Answer: Here’s the often shocking reality: Google STRONGLY prefers text heavy pages. We leave in a design age heavily influenced by Apple, iPhone, clean, etc., but that’s not at all how Google works as a search engine. So your best practice for SEO is to have EYE CANDY for humans at the TOP and lots of keyword heavy text, embedded into critical tags such as the TITLE tag, H1, A HREF, img ALT and lots of great syntax at the BOTTOM.
Geico.com is a great example of this EYE CANDY at the TOP and TEXT HEAVY at the bottom. What people do now realize is that we are designing for two audiences – TOP / for humans who like graphics / pictures, and BOTTOM / Google, search engines that like text. Such is the split-the-baby world of search engine optimization.
