Question: Let’s say you intend to open a uniquely named company. Do you feel that it is worthwhile to engage in a marketing campaign that influences people’s search behavior to start all their searches moving forward by starting with your company’s weird name followed by the typical keywords that they’ve already been using?
Answer: SEO is keyword driven, 100%. So if you are trying to get to the top of Google, that has important implications. First and foremost, you MUST be using keywords that people are actually searching for. If you have a new widget called Widgety-widge or whatever, it is of no value to be No. 1 on Google, if no one searches for it. You have to ‘reach out’ to known categories such as ‘potato peeler’ or whatever, so that people will see it. Another strategy is to focus on adjacent markets – close markets / close terms that people actually use.
In terms of the domain, therefore, yes embedding keywords in a domain IS helpful. That’s one reason our domain is jm-seo.net – because SEO is such an important part of our mission, and we want to stand out for those searches. If your company has a strong focus on a particular niche and if there are very important keywords, then when launching the business, it IS a good idea to choose a domain that contains your keywords.
As we teach in our SEO classes, the domain / keyword nexus is only one factor however.
