Question: Is there a way to measure the effectivness of adding a xml sitemap to your website? In other words, will I see any changes in Google page rankings based upon this addition?
Answer: Yes. You can see before and after your position on Google for searches. You can measure if particular pages are indexed, before and after. And, finally, you can measure if having an XML sitemap correlates with increased inbound search traffic.
That said, having an XML sitemap is an ‘advanced’ thing – I recommend it only after you have done the basics, not the least of which is having an HTML sitemap. It is useful mainly if it is a VERY competitive market.
